The East Utica Optimist Club

March 2006 Bulletin #1

Great American Heart Run and Walk

The Junior Optimists from Kennedy Junior High walked the 5-miler at the Heart Run and Walk. The weather was about 23 degrees with a bone chilling wind. Complete results will be in our next bulletin.

Respect for Law

The annual Respect for Law Meeting honored Mr. George Sabo. Mr. Sabo chased, and helped members of the Utica Police Department arrest, a hit-and-run driver. The club thanks Mr. Sabo for his bravery. The speaker for the evening was Mr. Robert Berry, a local attorney specializing in Elder Law. He gave us information about Living Wills, DNR documents, Health Care Proxies, and Last Wills and Testaments.

Utica College Basketball

Don Guido reported that the UC Basketball game was a complete success. The 50 students from Albany Street School were accompanied to the game by club members and teachers from Albany Street SChool. The club also provided pizza and soda to the kids following the game. Thanks to all the chaperones!

Paniccia on D.L.

We have received word that Sam Paniccia sustained a possible career-ending injury while playing in The Villages Softball League. Sam was injured while attempting to run the bases. The injury was compounded when he attempted to throw the ball from 3rd to 1st base. This opened the door for a career 78 year-old minor leaguer who was promoted to the Big League to take Sam's place on the roster. Don Guido is eagerly awaiting for bidding to begin on E-Bay for the Sam Paniccia model bat and glove.

Concession Stand Report

Thanks to all the club members who volunteered to staff the concession stand at Proctor's home basketball games this season. It was fun to interact with the students and adults who attended the games.
