The East Utica Optimist Club

April 2006 Bulletin #1

Basketball Team Dinner

The 2005-2006 Section III Class AA championship basketball team from Proctor High School was honored by the club at the Radisson on March 21st. 135 people attended the dinner. Members of the 1965-1966 Section III championship team from Proctor also attended. Mr. Frank Policelli, local attorney and member of the 1965-1966 team, addressed the most recent champions. Jason Powles, WKTV Sports Director, lauded the team and delivered the main address. Mayor Timothy Julian presented the team with a proclamation from the City of Utica. The club presented each member of the team with a T-shirt, plaque, and a DVD recording of the championship game played at the Manley Field House of Syracuse University. Diane Waskiewicz and Ann Calabrese were co-chairs of the event.

Southern News

Sam Paniccia is mending from his possible career-ending injury sustained in one of those hotly contested games in The Villages. The E-Bay bidding on his glove and bat was a disaster. Neither received a bid. Sam stated in a letter that he admits to having to rethink his game. He may take the advice of his daughter who told him to "play the game like an old man, because that's what you are."

The club welcomes back all the returning sun birds.

Masonic Home Carnival

Thanks to club members Frank Scalise, Don Guido, Jeanne and Fred Del Genio, and Nick Parrotta who volunteered on March 22 at the Masonic Home Carnival. Frank especially enjoyed making the cotton candy even though he was covered in fluff most of the time.

Club Donations

$500 to the Proctor High School Girls Varsity Softball Team to help in the costs of their annual spring trip to compete in the National Softball Tournament. $200 to the Young Scholars Program for their annual pancake breakfast. The breakfast is scheduled for Sunday, May 7, from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM, at Donovan Middle School.
